Originality

What makes a t shirt company succeed where others fail? Originality. Haven't you seen the same designs over and over? Are you sick of them? Me too. If you don't have original design ideas, don't bother. You don't want to be the one that copies – you want to be the stunning original that other people try, and fail, to copy.

Quality

Cheap t shirts suck! Make sure you hook up with a quality manufacturer and a good printing company. Designs that fade or peel off colors that run, collars that are too tight, tee shirts that lose their shape...all bad press for your company. Your bread and butter is not the one-time sale. It's repeat business and word of mouth recommendations. One the web, reputation is currency.

Marketing

The last component to success is marketing. If you're on a budget (and what startup company isn't), the social media marketing is an obvious choice. We can't all buy a Superbowl spot -and look how well that worked for the online pet product company with the sock puppet mascot anyway, what was that name again?- but anybody can make a free facebook ad and send out a free custom t shirt to every 1000th person who likes your page. Giveaways are a great way to engage the public, build traffic and get your name out there. Twitter and Pinterest are other great opportunities to engage. Crosslink by tweeting out links to Pinterest boards featuring your awesome t shirt designs. Don't be shy about asking your friends to spread the word. This is your dream. Make people sit up and take notice.
